Redwood (101)

Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) —formal upright style Donated by Bill Sullivan in memory of his wife, Nancy. Redwood Empire Bonsai Society now sponsors tree. This was the first tree donated to our garden. It was found about 1975 in a Marin County slide-area.

Trident Maple (102)

Trident maple (kaede or to-kaede in Japanese) (Acer buergerianum)—informal upright style Donated by the estate of Gloria Clementson. This tall informal upright was grown from seed. It grew wild in a can for 10 years. In 1989, Gloria styled the tree.

Coast Redwood (105)

Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) Donated by Seiji Shiba. Purchased in 1971 in a seven-gallon can, this redwood was designed by Seiji after reading a book by John Naka.

Bald Cypress (106)

Bald Cypress (hagaromo-matsu or rakü-yoshü in Japanese) (Taxodium disticum) Donated by the estate of Gloria Clementson. This native from the swamps of southeastern United States was acquired and styled by Gloria in 1988.

Japanese Mountain Maple (108)

Japanese mountain maples (Acer palmatum cv. ‘Kiyohime’)—rock planting Donated by Doug Ruffner. This rock planting was created in 1979 from lace rock and ‘Kiyohime’ cultivars.

California Juniper (109)

California Juniper (kashu-shimpaku in Japanese) (Juniperus californica) Donated by Chuichi Kawahira. Collected in 1954 from the high desert region near Palmdale in southern California, this tree was styled about 1964.
